With an array of Indian and Chinese companies expanding their global footprint, the trend mainly started by technology firms to hire foreign interns has both deepened and extended to other industries. Companies ranging from hospitality, market research to airport development have an ever rising awareness of the benefits of hiring foreign interns. While many companies are vying for international interns to connect better with their target customers abroad, others are seeking graduates from leading business schools to develop international talent. Infosys in India and Huawei in China are just two of the many companies that are continuously hiring interns from countries as diverse as Mexico, South Africa, and Germany.

Anil Misra is a senior expert in the field of renewable energies, having worked both in India and abroad for the last 27 years. As a student he spent one year at the University of Siegen, Germany, where he later also taught. He currently works with GIZ as Senior Programme Advisor. As part of a Germany-based multinational organisation, German is part of his daily work. He has previously joined one of the German courses offered by his employer in collaboration with Language Must.

Nitin Misra, a senior IT engineer from Delhi, recently completed a one-year MBA programme at the University of St. Gallen. You have many official languages and countless of other languages. In fact, India has the most complex linguistic set up anywhere with literally thousands of languages being spoken. Nevertheless, there is one language that functions as a lingua franca across much of the country. Indians generally refer to it as Hindi!

Why should I do an internship in India or China? Take a look around you. How many students in your school are doing internships in India or China? Not many, I suppose. This by itself is the first advantage of doing an internship there. If an employer has two identical candidates with everything else being the same except that one of them has done an interesting internship during his/her college years, who do you think the employer is going to prefer? Teaching your native language and with it your cultural background in a foreign country like India is an adventure in itself. Let me give you some examples. Little did I think about that a cartoon picture of a woman can make grown men blush and turn their heads down when mentioning “der Po” (German word for “bum”) while talking about body parts. Also, as I am used to say “Gesundheit” (“bless you”) to a sneezing person in Germany, here, people just apologize for sneezing. Another one: Once, one of my students asked me with an expression close to horror in his eyes “I heard Germans eat food that is not completely done!” It took me a moment to realize that he was referring to some of the ways meat is prepared in Germany and once more realized the differences between Germany and India when it comes to perception, behaviour and food.

If you were given a choice between your Passion and a Job that you don’t like much, what would you choose? Of course you will answer that you would love to carry on with your passion and not with a job that you are not interested in. But what if that job pays you good bucks but your passion doesn’t do any good to you in monetary terms? Many people would probably switch to the job leaving behind their passion because of societal pressure and conceived monetary concerns.

It is true that people expect you to take a good job just after you complete your graduation and that way society assumes you to be truly settled in your life. But this well-paying job might just become something for the next couple of years before you start feeling so bored and monotonous with doing something you are not interested in and then you realize that you are definitely not getting anywhere with your life – or at least not where you wanted to. If that is the case, then it might be really frustrating to deal with almost anything going on in your life. So what you need to do is find your passion and go for it rather than just going for any other bloody boring job.

This quote aptly describes my basic motivation, which is why I am in India. I find myself in an orientation phase, and felt the desire to leave my daily life to look beyond the box. I want to give myself some time before I begin the next phase of life. A time to think about how I want to shape my future. A time when I want to find role models who inspire me. A time when I left my habits behind to learn new ones. Simply a time to broaden my horizon. For this purpose, it is fruitful to leave the familiar and immerse yourself in another culture. Exactly that was a secret dream of mine that had been growing within me for quite some years.
